Earn Arts Elective Credit at NESA
Are you pursuing your full time studies elsewhere but interested in taking a class at NESA? Next fall semester we are offering credits in Acting, Chorus, Ballet, Tap Dance, Cartooning, Stage Production, and Visual Art.
Registration Process
1. Complete the interest form below by July 1st.
2. Head of School Jennifer Chambers will follow up to schedule an interview with the student and family
3. The student will be invited to shadow a current NESA student during elective classes
4. Submit registration forms and payment by August 1st

Chorus

Course Description: Students will learn the foundational elements of choral singing including proper breath support, vowel placement and diction. Students will learn three and four part arrangements and students will participate in a fall showcase performance.

Ballet I

Course Description: The study of classical ballet for the entering student with little or limited previous study and experience. Emphasis is placed on fundamental principles of ballet technique: correct body placement, alignment, turn-out, transfer of weight, muscle strength, flexibility, coordination, musicality and classical port de bras. Students will learn and practice in detail the mechanics, dynamics and artistic qualities of basic ballet movements and develop self-discipline and a professional attitude.

Intro to Acting

Course Description: Students engage in exercises that build ensemble and develop their skills as actors. The course introduces the fundamentals of acting through work on imagination, voice, and body. Students learn to make specific choices while responding organically to their scene partners and the demands of the script through improvisation, scripted work, and scene study.
Students also create original work while exploring dramatic structure and approaches to character, including close-to-self scenes, monologues, and ensemble projects. The movement portion focuses on spatial awareness and using the body as an acting instrument, moving from “actor’s neutral” to a fully activated physical presence on stage.

Beginning Tap

Description: This course is designed for first-year tap dance students and introduces the fundamental principles and techniques of tap dancing. Instruction combines rhythm, jazz, and modern movement to help students develop both technical skill and an aesthetic understanding of dance as an art form. Throughout the course, students build a foundation in tap dance terminology and introductory warm-up exercises while learning to apply rhythms, beats, and movement patterns to choreographed floor progressions.

Cartooning

Description: This course introduces students to the art of cartooning through projects such as cartoon sketching, greeting cards, comic strips, comic books, and cartoon logos. Students explore a range of cartooning styles and approaches while developing their creativity, visual storytelling, and artistic voice. The course encourages imaginative thinking and helps students build confidence drawing for both personal enjoyment and creative expression.

Creating a 2D World
Instructors: Kelley Hersey-Fred Faudie and Julie Sumanis

Description: This introductory art course asks students to consider and become familiar with four overarching visual principles by manipulating a variety of tools, materials, and processes. It covers the basics of seeing and looking with digital cameras, explores the qualities of expressive mark-making using both common and unusual tools and methods, and allows students to experience and begin to understand what paints and brushes can do. Each segment of the course will generally address these same four visual principles: edges/framing, composition, positive/negative, and value/tone/hue.

Stage Production
Instructor: Joseph Cooley

Description: This introductory stage production course introduces students to the fundamental technical and design elements of theater. Students will study scenic design, sound design, production analysis, analysis sheets, and stage specifications and dimensions, while building practical skills in scale drawing and visual communication. Through hands-on work, students gain an understanding of how technical theater supports performance and storytelling.

Registration Deadline
Registration and payment are due by August 1.
Cancellations and Refunds
It may be necessary for a parent to cancel their registration after full tuition has been paid. If cancellation is due to a serious illness or injury that prevents participation in NESA activities, New England School of the Arts will refund the paid tuition provided that a doctor’s note certifying the illness or injury is submitted in writing. Any cancellations for other reasons are not subject to refunds.
